No Big changes on IE 8

Just in case you were holding your breath for some big changes in the graphical user interface of Internet Explorer 8, it is right about time to exhale. Already behind Mozilla's Firefox 3.0 in terms of the development process, Microsoft plans nothing spectacular for the IE8 GUI. The first taste of Internet Explorer 8, despite bringing to the table redesigned visual details, features only anodyne changes, and no accurate clue as to where Microsoft is moving with the final visual style of the browser. In comparison, Mozilla has already implemented the redesign of the Firefox 3.0 graphical user interface as of Beta 4.
The past week, at MIX08, on the very first day of Microsoft's web-centric conference, the company available for download, immediately after the opening keynote address, the first beta of the next iteration of the Internet Explorer browser. The Redmond Company placed a strong emphasis on the fact that IE8 Beta 1 was Beta aimed almost exclusively at developers, and that end users would be getting only a preview of what the final product would have to offer.
IE8 Beta 1 "is primarily focused at web developers and designers, and it is the first beta, so as you can imagine, there's a lot that we're going to have done on this. A lot of the end user, or consumer features really are not surfaced in this build necessarily, because it is really targeted toward the developers and designers," stated Matthew Lapsen, IE Product Manager for Channel 10, and you can see this via the first video embedded at the bottom of this article.
In the screenshots integrated with this article you will be able to do an easy comparison of Firefox 2.0 vs. Firefox 3.0 Beta 4, as well as Internet Explorer 7 vs. Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1. Now, in all fairness, Mozilla is at Beta 4, and Beta 1 of Firefox 3.0 did not look and feel very different than version 2.0. But at the same time, Lapsen informed that Microsoft will not go aver the top with the redesign of IE8's user interface. Now, according to Dean Hachamovitch General Manager Internet Explorer, IE8 Beta 2 will have much more to offer for the consumers, and in this context it also could offer a more complete preview of what the final UI IE8 will end up with. But whatever it will be, Microsoft means not to shock IE users.

"But the key is also, we're not saying that there's going to be huge, landmark changes in the UI either, obviously we want to have continuity with new functionality as well. So we don't want to shock out users with a whole bunch of changes," Lapsen added.

Vista to become more robust!

The saga of the general availability of Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RTM nears its end. Microsoft will drop Vista SP1 on March 18, 2008. Having been released to manufacturing on February 4, 2008, along with Windows Server 2008, Vista SP1 did not ship immediately to end users as expected. Instead, Microsoft postponed the full release of the first service pack for its latest Windows client until mid-March. In this context, the wait for Vista SP1 RTM is nearly over.
At the same time, Microsoft did offer the final bits of the service pack as early as the RTM week. The first to get their hands on Vista SP1 RTM were the 15,000 testers that contributed to the beta testing process. Microsoft also started the production of Vista SP1 DVDs, and served the bits to OEMs. MSDN and TechNet Plus subscribers are among the select few that were permitted access not only to the standalone Vista SP1 package, but also to the slipstream version of the service pack, the ISO DVD with Vista and SP1 integrated.
Without an actual choice of their own, end users found themselves last in line, shielded by Microsoft from potential hardware driver integration problems. But the consumer release of Vista SP1 gold is just around the corner. Amazon.com is already accepting pre-orders for Vista SP1 and offers this snippet of information: "availability: this item will be released on March 19, 2008. Pre-order now! Ships from and sold by Amazon.com Gift-Wrap available."
Amazon.com also features the new boxes for Windows Vista Ultimate SP1 for just $299.99, Home Premium SP1 for $215.99, and Home Premium Upgrade SP1 for $94.99. As you can see, the price cut, at least for Vista Ultimate SP1 full-retail edition, is quite consistent, no less than $100. But Amazon.com also delivers one final bit of information, the confirmation that Vista SP1 will be released on March 18, 2008.
"Pre-order this version to get SP1 included in the box. Or buy Windows Vista Ultimate now, then update to SP1 online--free of charge--when the new versions are released on March 18, 2008," reads a message on the website.

Medal of Honor: Airborne

It’s raining soldiers

I signed on with the 82nd Airborne because it promised that its new approach to fighting the war would be the best way to serve my country in this terrible crisis. It’s been a tough three years over here in Europe, but the Airborne has proved that it can take the good fight for freedom to new heights. Over the last six operations in my tour, I’ve really done my part to stop Jerry! Before I jumped out of a C-47 for the first time over Italy, I had some serious doubts about being a paratrooper. I had heard the horror stories from the battlefield— this seemingly never-ending war has worn down many good soldiers who are now just sick of the constant stress of battle. Thankfully, from the moment I jumped out of that plane, I was engaged in one of the most intense adventures of my life. Dropping onto a rooftop in the village of Adanti, I was overzealous and botched my first landing. Luckily, none of the Italian Blackshirts saw me, and I quickly took out several enemy defensive positions. My six missions were challenging, but they flew by. Of course, I can always practice airdrops with other members of the Airborne in simulated war games, but the 12-person participant limit is a little disappointing. I know this is a terrible thing to say, but sometimes, I wish the war wasn’t over. Being a part of the Airborne has brought an exciting new dimension to combat, making me often wish I was back on the front lines.

For: Parachuting into battles, grants more freedom and adds verticality to combat.
Against: The six missions are over too quickly, and the AI is inconsistent.

Get it right!

Ever wondered of how to find a fashion school online? With the increasing demand for fashion schools, you may be left in a state of dilemma of which fashion school to choose. Some might even get offers from many F-schools. In order to make a thorough analysis of all the fashion schools in California, I’ve found a great site. It gives you information not only about fashion school in California but also fashion schools in Los Angeles. The site is fashion-school-finder.com. California, I learned, has a number of fashion-focus areas and if you are interested in getting educated in top-caliber fashion schools, you should consider fashion schools in California. I am pretty sure that it’s not cheap to study in this fashion schools so if I really want to give it a try, I have to work doubly hard as well. That’s fine. After all, the rewards that one will be getting once she gets her degree in this kind of school is worthy enough to give her a nice, decent job in the fashion industry. Hope you find this information useful!

Crysis

Combat is key in this absolutely gorgeous tactical shooter!

Let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way up front. On a properly configured Vista machine with DirectX 10 hardware, Crysis is the best-looking game we’ve ever played. Its jungle environments are lush and realistic, with plenty of wide-open areas and just a handful of loading screens in the entire game. This incredible level of graphical detail is what PC gaming is all about. Screenshots don’t do this game justice. Seeing Crysis in action will take your breath away. The perfectly rendered jungle scenes, gorgeous beaches, and water that looks better than the real thing set a new high mark for PC graphics and far surpass what we expected from a first-gen DirectX 10 title. Even more surprising, when we tested the game on DirectX 9 hardware, it still looked stunning—although we missed the fancy depth-of-field effect that is used fairly liberally on DX10 systems.

As for the game, it’s carved straight from the generic first- person shooter playbook. There are bad guys (North Koreans this go around), who are doing something they shouldn’t unearthing an alien artifact), and a hero (you) with powers (via a super suit that lets you jump higher, run faster, and be invisible) that make you uniquely capable of accomplishing a challenging goal (saving the world). It’s all very predictable. The game mechanics aren’t particularly innovative either—we’ve done all this before. That’s not to say Crysis isn’t a fun, wellpolished game—it definitely is. It’s just not revolutionary from a gameplay perspective. The game’s by-the-book weapons include pistols, a shotgun, a rifle or two, and a submachine gun, which you customize with different add-ons: scopes, silencers, grenade launchers, and a few others. While this level of customization could have added some needed depth, you generally end up choosing between the silencer and grenade launcher, depending on the number of baddies you want to take out. Because you’ll pick up most of the weapons and add-ons within the first hour or two of the game, and you gain absolutely no new suit capabilities beyond those you start with (armor, superspeed, cloaking, and superstrength), character development feels extremely weak. Where Crysis really excels is in actual combat, especially at the higher difficulty settings. While the AI seems mildly stunted at the default difficulty, at more challenging settings it’s more realistic without seeming
prescient. The brilliant AI, combined with the open maps, which let you scout an encounter unseen and then approach from the best possible side to crush the enemy, is the game’s saving grace.

For: Nano Suit - stunning graphics and amazing combat. I love skulking around the jungle.
Against: Zoot Suit - Aside from obvious graphical improvements, Crysis lacks real innovation.

Mainconcept Reference

Also new to our benchmark suite is MainConcept’s Reference. You might not be familiar with the MainConcept name, but you probably use one of its products. Corel, Adobe, and AverMedia all use MainConcept’s codecs. We use MainConcept’s freely available Reference demo to transcode the 1080p MPEG-2 file created in our ProShow Producer benchmark
to the AVC/H.264 codec at 1920x1080 resolution. The Reference demo uses the same codec as the fully licensed version but includes a watermark in a corner. The benchmark gets a healthy bump from quad cores and scales well with clock speed. Interestingly, this is one of the few benchmarks that run significantly faster.
